Sepia Saturday 89: Asa Manchester, Buckeye Plumbing and Heating

Picking up on the thread of store fronts, I selected this photograph of Buckeye Plumbing & Heating with Asa Manchester standing in the far left of the picture. This is a restoration of a badly damaged photograph. The lower left corner was almost entirely missing and the photograph was badly faded.

Based on Asa's estimated age in the photograph (about 30ish) and a 1902-03 Dayton Directory listing for Buckeye Plumbing and Heating, I suspect this photo was taken ca 1900. The identities of the two other gentlemen in the photograph are unknown. One possibility is J. Volney Russell, manager of Buckeye Plumbing in 1902.

This is my first contribution to Sepia Saturday having just learned about it today!  I hope to have larger pictures and links to online catalogs up and running soon.

  1. Hello, and welcome to the wonderful world of blogging. I love blogging...have been doing it since 2006 and have made some incredibly wonderful friends in the blog world.

I love the name of your blog, though I must admit, the old lace part is what draws me in the most. I love all things vintage...and old lace is among the most beautiful of vintage treasures.

Attics, on the other hand, used to frighten me. When I was little, the attic was reached through a door in my closet. At night, I used to FREAK OUT that something was up there lurking...waiting to "get me." Now, I think attics are cool, but back then, boy, was I afraid.

    Anyhow, welcome!

    Blessings to you,
    Patti

  2. Patti, you will REALLY relate when I post the blog about the skeleton in the attic! There is actually a very simple explanation but we have had a lot of fun with it through the years. Thanks for the welcome. I've already learned a lot.

My memories of my first trip up to the attic spurred the blog name - but, Attics, Skeletons and Old Lace just didn't have the right ring. Besides, the skeleton is long gone. :)

  3. I agree that "Attics, Skeletons and Old Lace" doesn't have the right ring, but I like the "ring" of "Old Lace and Skeletons."

  4. Welcome! Attics make me think of stored treasures, and of course with lace you cant go wrong.

  5. Welcome to Sepia Saturday. You even found a shop to share. Attics these days meet storage rooms for junk - ours is mainly insulation and the resident sparrows.

  9. I love the idea that upstairs they cleaned out your pockets and downstairs they cleaned out everything else. Fascinating that two businesses like this shared the same building.

  11. Tattered and Lost, I LOVED your line "Upstairs they cleaned out your pockets ...." I'd really like that as a caption. Maybe to keep up the alliteration, "downstairs they cleaned out your pipes!" Wish I'd thought of that. :)

  13. A very nice photo on the theme. The catalyst of the Sepia Sat. weekend theme really helps organize the clutter in the attic. Hope you enjoy the group.
